World Champion racer Bin Hendi set to make F1H20 debut

The F1H20’s Grand Prix of Portugal this weekend will welcome one of powerboat racing’s most successful racers in the former of Nadir Bin Hendi, reports Richard Carr.

Pairing of champions

Team Victory racer Bin Hendi will team-up with current World Championship point’s leader Shaun Torrente for his debut in Porto this weekend.

The news of Victory’s two boat team looks set to spark a new venture for 44 year-old Hendi, who will be looking to add to his current Class 1 and XCat World Championship. His partner for those titles, Arif Said Al-Zaffian said: “This will be a completely different and a totally new experience for Nadir. We see this as a great opportunity to introduce Nadir to the highest level of international circuit racing. It will be a steep learning curve but at the same time we are putting no pressure on him.”

Pedigree

There aren’t many racers that can rival Bin Hendi’s success in the sport. His talent is multi-faceted and was crafted from his early days of competing in traditional wooden powerboats in the UAE and international Jet Ski competitions. Unsurprisingly, he won titles in both disciplines.

Later in life he stepped up into the premiere class of powerboat racing in the 2004 Class 1 World Championship; he began as a driver before switching over to the take throttles in 2005.

Victory’s addition in Porto adds to an already very strong field of 20 drivers and ten teams from 12 countries. Torrente is currently five points ahead of Youssef Al Rubayan and Jonas Andersson who are in joint second.

About Richard Carr

Richard Carr, of Poole, is one of the UK’s most experienced and successful powerboat racers, who has competed in the sport globally.

He has won numerous domestic and international honours: he became British Class 1 Champion in 1991; he was the winner of the coveted Needles Trophy and he also came second in the Cowes Torquay Cowes race in 1992. It was the year the race was controversially competed in the fog and it has been argued for many years that he actually won the race.

He is known in the sport for his aggressive racing character in rough seas and recently raced in the USA for Geico in 2011.
