Scarborough gearing up for new P1 Powerboat season

Yorkshire’s historic coastal town Scarborough will once again play host to the opening weekend of P1 racing later this month, writes former P1 team owner Richard Carr.

Grand Prix

Scarborough made its debut in the championship last year and thanks to its superb hosting skills it will once again up the season for the one of the world’s leading marine motorsport brands as the P1 Yorkshire Grand Prix of the Sea.

Local fans and travelling fans will be able to watch all the action free of charge which will include the P1 SuperStock powerboats and the AquaX jet skis. The action will take place off South Bay between May 14 and 15, with the event being sponsored by Dale Power Solutions.

“Scarborough offers first class facilities and attractions and proved to be a superb location to launch our 2015 season” said P1 chief operating officer Robert Wicks. “With its historic harbour and castle headland, the geography of South Bay offers us a natural amphitheatre for racing and for spectators to view all the action and we are working with our partners, sponsors and local businesses to make this year’s event an even better spectacle and to attract more visitors to the borough and boost the local economy.”

Family fun

Each day will be packed full of action with the boats going out as early as 9.30am on Saturday morning for qualifying ahead of the opening race in the afternoon.

Following the powerboats will be a hydroflight and Jet Ski freestyle display off the East and West Piers.

Sunday’s action will again get underway early doors ahead of the main event the Grand Prix of the Sea at 4.30pm.

Country wide

The 2016 P1 powerboat season will visit five venues around the country meaning there are plenty of opportunities to watch your favourite drivers. After Scarborough the teams will head to Greenock on the River Clyde, Gosport, Bournemouth and Cardiff Bay.
