Class 1 action returns for 2015

Looked upon as the pinnacle of powerboat racing, the UIM Class 1 World Championship suffered a disappointing 2014 with just three venues used, so Richard Carr asks, what does 2015 have in store?

Having seen the Offshore Powerboat Grand Prix series kick off in style earlier this month and with P1 and XCAT racing showing improved strength this year, it’s now or never for Class 1 to show its true prowess.

It all starts new week in Venezia-Rimini, Italy with four more venues set for the rest of the year in Italy and Abu Dhabi.

  • 30 June/1 July – Venezia/Rimini, Italy (V1 ONLY)
  • 8/9 July – Salerno/Formia, Italy (V1 ONLY)
  • 8/9 July – Salerno, Italy (C1 ONLY)
  • 16/18 October – Terracina, Italy (C1/V1) – (TBC)
  • 9/13 November – Abu Dhabi, UAE (C1/V1)

Team Victory will be back to defend their 2014 title against the likes of Team Abu Dhabi and Fendi Racing.

Teams in full:

Class 1:

  • Fendi Racing
  • New Star Racing
  • Team Abu Dhabi
  • Victory Team
  • Zabo Racing

New season, new boat

Team Bernico – New Star will kick off the new campaign with a brand new Bernico 43’ Leverage, the latest offering from the highly acclaimed Belgian high performance boat builder.

With twin 700Sci Mercury power-plants, much is expected in the V1 class of Bernico this year. Last year the team recorded two victories to finish in fifth, however after early tests of the new boat Russian pilot Dmitry Vandyshev was excited by its handling and overall performance.

About Richard Carr

Richard Carr, of Poole, is one of the UK’s most experienced and successful powerboat racers, who has competed in the sport globally.

He has won numerous domestic and international honours: he became British Class 1 Champion in 1991; he was the winner of the coveted Needles Trophy and he also came second in the Cowes Torquay Cowes race in 1992. It was the year the race was controversially competed in the fog and it has been argued for many years that he actually won the race.

He is known in the sport for his aggressive racing character in rough seas and recently raced in the USA for Geico in 2011.
