Legendary offshore powerboat racers Richard Carr and Steve Curtis will finally make their long awaited return to the sport to take on arguable the toughest offshore race in the world, Cowes Torquay Cowes.
The duo were pencilled in to compete in the Venture Cup Round Ireland Race before it was cancelled, however along with Paul Sinclair they will line up for this years’ race on the 4th September.
The crew have amassed years of experience in offshore racing competing in many races across both sides of the Atlantic and although their Cougar might be slightly long in the tooth, it has the very latest machinery from Mercury.
Richard Carr’s best finish in the world famous was when he finished second in 1991 in a highly controversial race, which saw a number of disqualifications after the race.
To date, the 56th year of the race has attracted 12 entries however more are anticipated ahead of September’s race according to raceboatinternational.com.
There will be a number of new teams on the starting line-up including Exeter businessman and keen CTC competitor Drew Langdon, who has teamed up with Italian Giancarlo Gangiano in Silverline, a Mercury powerboared Outerlimites hull.
Germany’s Markus Henrick’s 55 footer could prove to be the surprise package, whils the other A class entry is the Italian outfit Tommy Racing.
There are also two entires in B class with one being a former CTC winner Microlink, an American Phantom Hull powered by Ilmor and the Belgium RIB Biretta Due.
Cowes Torquay Cowes
The Cowes Torquay Cowes has long been recognised as one of powerboat racings toughest challenges. In terms of sporting comparisons, the race has been mentioned in the same breath as Le Mans and the Indy 500.
Normally around 20 boats race between Cowes and Torbay, with the race generally lasting around three hours.
The race, which will be 55 years-old this summer, is the brainchild of newspaper tycoon and World War 2 fighter pilot, Sir Max Aitken.
The first on August 27th took seven hours and 17 minutes to complete and was won by Thunderbolt, a Christina-hull craft driven by the former saloon-car racer Tommy Sopwith.
