Australia is taking hosting the next round of the UIM XCAT World Championships seriously and are even entering a team of their own to take advantage of home support, writes former British powerboat champion Richard Carr.
Home team, home driver, home support
Gold Coast based racer Tom Barry-Cotter will pilot Australia’s XCAT, which was recently unveiled by Barry-Cotter and the city’s Mayor Tom Tate, who were both thrilled with how the boat looked.
Speaking to the official XCAT website, Mayor Tate seemingly piled the pressure on the Gold-Coast born racer.
“We’ve got passion, speed and a fabulous looking boat and although I don’t want to put too much pressure on Tom, to me that adds up to victory!
“I encourage all Gold Coasters to get down to the Broadwater from August 21 – 23 to see the excitement of XCAT racing and Australia’s Gold Coast XCAT in action.”
Despite not being involved in the first three rounds, Barry-Cotter and veteran teammate ex-SuperCat World Champion Ross Willaton have the ability and experience to spring a surprise or two.
Together, the pair won the 2009 Australian Offshore Powerboat title and will no doubt run their rivals close next month when Round 4 gets underway down under!
Tight at the top
Heading into Round 4 of 8 it couldn’t be any tighter at the top of the championship. XDubai head the table on 92 points with Abu Dhabi Team just one point behind. Italians Matteo Nicolini and Tomasso Polli follow behind in third in the Horrsenbuhs boat.
About Richard Carr
Richard Carr, of Poole, is one of the UK’s most experienced and successful powerboat racers, who has competed in the sport globally.
He has won numerous domestic and international honours: he became British Class 1 Champion in 1991; he was the winner of the coveted Needles Trophy and he also came second in the Cowes Torquay Cowes race in 1992. It was the year the race was controversially competed in the fog and it has been argued for many years that he actually won the race.
He is known in the sport for his aggressive racing character in rough seas and recently raced in the USA for Geico in 2011.
